Officials in coastal Chatham County are debating whether to erect a memorial to a slain policeman. Officer Mark MacPhail was gunned down in 1989. The execution of his convicted killer, Troy Davis, made international headlines two years ago. County commissioner Helen Stone wants a monument where officer MacPhail died at a Savannah bus station, but officials say this would set a bad precedent.

Anti-death penalty advocates and community members plan to gather to commemorate the anniversary of the execution in Georgia of Troy Davis. A coalition of groups is organizing a memorial service Friday evening at First Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church in Savannah.

Martin Davis-Correia was her brother's chief supporter. She rallyied Amnesty International and other death penalty opponents to her brother's cause. Her work helped win Davis a rare hearing in federal court to prove his innocence. However, the courts ultimately upheld his death sentence.

Georgia death row inmate Troy Davis lost his life this week, but the public relations battle over his death continues. A man who stayed on the sidelines of that battle spoke publicly about the case. Spencer Lawton was the Savannah District Attorney who prosecuted the Davis case in 1991 and until this week has refused to comment on it.

Supporters and opponents of the Troy Davis execution squared off across a street from each other in Jackson. Ultimately, by the time Davis died, police in riot gear outnumbered the vocal demonstrators. Many came from far-off parts of the state to stand with one side or the other. Police reported few incidents with the demonstrators and the sizeable media contingent.

Death penalty opponents say, they hope the execution of Troy Davis will be the catalyst for a renewed fight to end capital punishment in the U-S. Davis' defenders tried to put the most positive spin on a failed 20-year attempt to overturn the Savannah man's conviction and sentence. Amnesty International Director Larry Cox says, his group's effort to abolish the death penalty will start again.

The widow of a slain Savannah police officer says "it's a time for healing" now that Georgia has executed Troy Davis for the murder 22 years ago. Joan MacPhail-Harris, the widow of Mark MacPhail, told The Associated Press in a phone interview after Wednesday's execution that she sees "nothing to rejoice" in Davis' death and is praying for the inmate's family.

Georgia inmate Troy Davis has been executed for the killing of an off-duty police officer in a case that has drawn worldwide support over his claims of innocence. Courts consistently ruled against him, however, and the officer's family says they finally have justice after 22 years.
