The Dougherty County School Board has decided not to renew the contracts of 24 teachers and two principals who were named in Gov. Nathan Deal's report on test cheating concerns.

Dougherty County District Attorney Gred Edwards said his office has determined that some of the cheating cases should be handled by the school board's administrative tribunal. He said other cases may be prosecuted in court.

The Senate education committee unanimously passed a bill Monday that would revoke bonuses for Georgia teachers who cheat on standardized tests. The Democratic-backed legislation now goes to the full Senate for a vote before heading to the governor's desk.

State investigators have uncovered widespread cheating in a second public school district –- this time in Dougherty County in South Georgia. The report follows revelations earlier this year that nearly 200 educators cheated on state tests in Atlanta.

Atlanta Public Schools officials say they plan to offer extra help to struggling students in the wake of a cheating scandal that has rocked the district. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that current intervention programs designed to help students during the school day will be increased from 12 weeks to 25 weeks and expanded from 58 to all 100 schools.

Georgia state investigators who uncovered widespread cheating in Atlanta Public Schools earlier this year now say they’ve found evidence of cheating in a second school system. Officials flagged half of Dougherty County schools for cheating after they found high numbers of erasures on state tests. The inquiry is about half done, but investigators have confirmed cheating in every school they’ve visited so far.

Atlanta Public Schools interim Superintendent Erroll Davis has sent letters home to all 178 employees implicated in the system's cheating scandal, informing them they can resign next week or face being fired.

Atlanta schools embroiled in a cheating scandal may have to pay back up to $260,000 in federal money for high-performing, low-income schools. Matt Cardoza, spokesman for the Georgia Department of Education, said Wednesday that state officials are trying to determine whether any of the 44 schools accused of cheating on 2009 standardized tests will have to return money.
