The Westminster tennis teams brought home two trophies from last Saturday’s festivities at Clayton County International Park. On the boys side, the Wildcats avenged last year’s loss to region-rival Blessed Trinity to capture the Class AA state championship. The girls lost to Blessed Trinity in the final, taking runner-up honors for the second straight season.

Taxes, pollen and the Walton girls tennis team winning a state title - three undeniable rites of Spring it seems. Last week the Lady Raiders, coached by Roberta Manheim and led by Emily Zabor, one of nine seniors, won its 147th straight match and its eighth straight state title.

The GHSA State Tennis Playoffs begin the weekend of April 22, and there are a host of teams across the state and all classifications thinking they have a chance to win some silverware. The metro area boasts plenty of the postseason favorites, with a few returning champions among them looking to repeat.

In the sports world, two words don’t usually walk hand in hand, “team” and “tennis.” Casual observers wouldn’t think so, but at Walton High School in East Cobb, the girls tennis team is the ultimate team sport. The roster is blessed with a seemingly endless number of key players, literally and figuratively. Oh, and in the measure of wins versus losses, Walton happens to be the best team Georgia high school athletics has ever seen.
