Friday a group of innovative young Georgians unveiled recommendations on how southwest Georgia’s Americus and Sumter County can grow and thrive. The goal of the pilot project of Young Gamechangers is to bring the voice of those under 40 to local decision makers.
Camden County is considering using state prisoners as firefighters. The plan would put two state inmates into up to five county fire stations, doubling the number of firefighters per station. County officials say it could save hundreds of thousands of budget dollars with unpaid inmates filling otherwise paid shifts.
Two south Georgia counties are among seven sites being considered for construction of what would be the world’s largest solar farm. Sumter and Tatnall counties are in the running for a $1.4 billion, 400 megawatt project to be built by Florida-based National Solar Power. Four other sites are being considered in Florida, with one other in North Carolina.
