The Georgia chapter of the NAACP is asking state lawmakers to end capital punishment. NAACP state president Edward Dubose said at a rally Monday that execution is murder. State Sen. Vincent Fort has said he will file legislation to end capital punishment.

Gov. Nathan Deal held a moment of silence for victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, which took place 10 years ago this Sunday. Deal led a brief memorial ceremony at the state Capitol Friday, flanked by Georgia's Chief Justice Carol Hunstein and Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle.

Georgia legislators are wrapping up their work redrawing the state's political boundaries. Redistricting is expected to be completed on Wednesday as the state Senate votes on a new congressional map that adds a 14th district in northeast Georgia. The House has already approved the map.

The redistricting special session continues Thursday for lawmakers at the state Capitol, with both the House and Senate chambers set for votes on the new maps. Lawmakers will also decide whether to give their approval to Governor Nathan Deal’s decision to block an increase in the state’s gas tax.

In only the second day of the state's legislative redistricting process, tensions erupted in the Georgia Senate Tuesday as Democrats accused their Republican colleagues of shutting them out and not allowing them to present alternate maps to a plan that could see a vote as soon as this week.
