On paper, it didn't look likely at all. Mercer is a mid-sized private school Macon that hasn't taken part in March Madness since 1985, while Duke is one of the most storied college teams in basketball history.
The last time Mercer University basketball took any part in March Madness, REO Speedwagon’s "Can't Fight This Feeling" was on top of the charts — March, 1985 to be exact.
The city council has agreed to solicit bids for an independent study to look at options for a possible new ballpark.
Starting January 1, 2014 student athletes will be better protected in gyms and on playing fields across Georgia. At least, that is the goal behind the Return to Play Act. The new state law requires schools give student athletes and their parents information about concussions. It also mandates that coaches pull a child from activity if he or she shows concussion symptoms.
Retired Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame Monday. In 1995, Cox led the Atlanta Braves to the team’s first World Series championship, and has won more than 2,000 games with the Braves. Cox will be inducted on July 27, 2014 in Cooperstown, N.Y. along with fellow retired managers Joe Torre, Tony La Russa, and players chosen by the Baseball Writer’s Association of America.
Fans are pouring into Atlanta for this weekend’s Southeastern Conference Championship game between Auburn and Missouri. Traveling to the city for the title game in the Georgia Dome has been a tradition for college football fans for more than a decade. The SEC title game has been held at the Georgia Dome since 1994. The current contract with the SEC means the conference will hold its football championship in Atlanta through 2017. But the Dome is slated for demolition that year.
Looking back, Vince Dooley never expected to last at the University of Georgia. “To my wife Barbara, I said, ‘Don’t get too comfortable. Don’t unpack! We may not be here very long, which is the nature of the business, but I’m going to give it my best shot,’” Dooley said in an interview Wednesday with GPB.
The Cobb County Commission will vote Tuesday on whether to approve a financing package for a new stadium for the Atlanta Braves. The team says it wants move to out of the city, and if it does, it won’t be the first time the Braves abandon a stadium. The city of Atlanta has said if the team leaves, it will demolish its stadium, which was originally built for the 1996 Olympics. That decision isn’t surprising in a city that some argue loves to tear down its own history.
Mercer University has the most successful first-year football program in NCAA Division I history. The Mercer University Bears wrapped up their first football season in 72 years Saturday with a record-setting win against Stetson University. The team defied low preseason expectations and topped a record for most wins in a debut season previously set by Old Dominion in 2009.
If Mercer University's new football team wins their homecoming game in Macon Saturday they will be the winningest first-year program in Division I history. Mercer University’s rebooted football team didn’t win their shot at the championship title with a loss at Marist College last Saturday, but the possibility of setting a national record still exists. Mercer’s first team in 72 years wasn’t expected to go 9-2 in their debut season. Their mostly-freshmen roster was picked to finish 11th in the Pioneer Football League, yet they came close to winning the conference title.
