The Georgia Department of Transportation authorized contracts for 16 new infrastructure improvement projects across the state Friday. The largest project award was $27.8 million to resurface 22 miles of Interstate 75 in Bartow and Gordon counties.

A major commuter rail project that would involve a quarter of the state’s transportation districts—is on life support. The proposed Atlanta-to-Griffin-to-middle Georgia line might not go before voters next year. The state’s 12 region roundtables had until midnight Monday to pare-down their project lists to fit within projected revenues from a proposed regional penny sales tax. While the two regions south of Atlanta ok’d the projects (Middle Georgia and Three Rivers) needed to link the passenger line together, Atlanta’s did not.

200 jobs and $120 million in investment is on the way to Spalding County, south of Atlanta. Governor Nathan Deal's office says engine manufacturer Caterpillar is set to make a major investment in its Griffin Engine Center. The Peoria, Ill.-based company will create at least 200 jobs and invest $120 million in machinery, equipment and upgrades to the existing facility.

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency is calling for donations to aid in the recovery in Spalding County from last week's deadly tornadoes. Two people were killed and 341 homes and businesses were reported destroyed or damaged in the county. GEMA says that beginning on Thursday, donated goods will be received at a center at 819 Memorial Drive in Griffin from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day until further notice.
