State Could Soon Fly Air Ambulances In SW Georgia
Gov. Nathan Deal’s budget proposal for fiscal year 2015 contains a surprising health care item: $13 million to fund air ambulance service in 14 southwest Georgia counties. If the funding is approved by the General Assembly, it will the first time the state has ever operated an ambulance service — either by air or by ground.

Georgia To Test Aquifer Storage
The Department of Natural Resources is set to decide today whether or not to test a new underground water storage system. The $4 million experiment in Baker County will be Georgia's first attempt at aquifer storage and recovery. Backers say the idea has been used successfully around the country for decades.

An Illinois real estate company has purchased the former Cooper Tire and Rubber Company plant in Albany for $8.5 million. Ray Kaye, executive vice president of Hilco, confirmed the purchase Wednesday and says the company is already working with prospective tenants.

Baker Co. Schools' Finances Probed
The superintendent of Baker County schools says he takes full responsibility for his system now under investigation for financial problems. Freddie Thompson says when he took over in January, the district was already in financial disarray. A local citizen group has questioned district spending in the face of poor student achievement. Baker County schools recently failed to make federal benchmarks of Annual Yearly Progress.

Military Training Center Brings Jobs
Up to 200 new jobs are on the way to southwest Georgia. And an economic official calls it the region’s biggest economic announcement in decades. A new military and para-military training center will call Early County home. The American International Marksmanship Academy could be open by the fall with 100 jobs. Another 100 could be in place within two years.

Transportation Project Lists Due
Wednesday is the deadline for 12 regions of Georgia to submit transportation wish lists to the state. It represents the first step toward putting the lists before voters. Sometime next year, voters would decide whether to approve a penny sales tax for their region's projects.
