Two south Georgia counties are among seven sites being considered for construction of what would be the world’s largest solar farm. Sumter and Tatnall counties are in the running for a $1.4 billion, 400 megawatt project to be built by Florida-based National Solar Power. Four other sites are being considered in Florida, with one other in North Carolina.

Georgia’s largest solar farm to date is heating homes in north Georgia. Its owner says he would like to start more big projects here, but it’s not financially feasible.

Georgia has lagged behind other states in alternative energies like solar. But a new solar farm--the state’s biggest--is doubling Georgia Power’s use of solar electricity and positioning the state to catch-up in the green energy race.
