The top teams in the latest softball rankings all looked impressive in the first round of the state playoffs. Class AAAAAA No. 1 Kennesaw Mountain cruised to a 2-0 win over Coffee in the first round while No. 2 East Coweta swept Newton.

The latest polls show plenty of movement across the Georgia softball landscape. In the Class AAAAAA poll, Collins Hill remains in the top spot with Brookwood behind, but Kennesaw Mountain jumped up a spot as did Archer.

Fourth-seeded North Cobb upset top-seeded Camden County in a 6-2, 5-4 sweep in the first round of the state playoffs. In Game 2, the visiting Warriors needed two sacrifice flies in the bottom of the eight to win - one to tie the game and the other for the win. After giving up two runs to trail 4-2 in the bottom half of the inning, North Cobb scored on Casey Page's bunt single, followed by Rachel Bartoe and Kaitlyn Lawrence's sacrifice flies.

Buford finished 5-1 in its 19th annual softball invitational to win its respective bracket. Three of the Wolves’ victories in pool play were shutouts; Tessa Daniels, who went 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a save, pitched two of the shutouts.

Last week, Chamblee came away with a few lopsided victories over Lithonia and Redan. Against Lithonia, Kelly Strychalski went for 4-for-4 a home run and two triples; in one inning she accomplished the feat of driving in seven batters

The Prep Country rankings came out earlier this week with Brookwood still the No. 1 team in Class AAAAA. Harrison jumped to the second slot after remaining unbeaten through 10 games.

Two of the top teams in the state did battle last Friday as Lowndes traveled down the street to take on Valdosta in the Winnersville Classic. The Wildcats looked to break their seven-game losing streak against the Vikings and actually had a seven-point lead going into the fourth quarter. But Lowndes took advantage of some late turnovers committed by the Wildcats and went on to win 24-17.
