Clinch County captured its fifth state title with a 24-14 win over Savannah Christian in the Class A championship game. The Panthers from Homerville sealed the deal with about six minutes left in the game by picking off a pass and immediately capitalizing for the game’s final touchdown.
It may have been by four more points than last year, but the 2010 Class AA championship game between Calhoun and Buford had a bit more drama than the 2009 match-up between Calhoun and Buford and certainly more fireworks than the 2008 match-up…between Calhoun and Buford.
Well, it's all over for now. The state football finals took place over the weekend at the Georgia Dome and the state championships have been decided. Therefore, high school football in Georgia is done for the rest of the year and the final rankings are in.
These two relatively new programs (both began in the 1990s) will face off today in downtown Atlanta, which is virtually halfway between the two schools. Both programs are having magical seasons that will remembered fondly by fans regardless of who wins today.
Appearing in the state semifinals for the first time since 1999, Chattahoochee played a game that will be remembered in Cougars lore last Friday night against Statesboro. Kicker Ammon Lakip booted a 27-yard field goal as time expired to lift Chattahoochee past the Devils 22-21.
The GHSA football playoffs reach their climax this weekend.
Ten teams across five classifications will play for state titles. Some of them are trying to cement dynasties, while others are just getting their first taste of glory.
