A new Tubman African American Museum is expected to open by January 2015 after construction resumes late this year in Macon. Museum Director Andy Ambrose gave an update on the timeframe Thursday at a meeting of the Macon-Bibb County Urban Development Authority. Work on the Cherry Street property stopped in 2005 when the museum ran out of money.

A spokesman for the Georgia Board of Regents says the board has not approved any renovation work done at the president's home at Georgia Regents University in several years. But a variety of renovations completed since June 2010 amount to about $284,000.

The state Transportation Board has approved spending up to $3 million to renovate eight of the state's welcome centers. Board Chair Johnny Floyd says many of the state's welcome centers have been around since the 1960s and are in need of updating.

The Sun Dial Restaurant, Bar & View above the Westin Peachtree Plaza hotel is set to begin renovations later this month. The 35-year-old restaurant is scheduled to serve its final dinner April 28 and is expected to be closed through early August.

The Georgia Historical Society has received a $500,000 grant from the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation that will go toward plans to renovate and move into a three-story antebellum mansion next to the society's library and archives in downtown Savannah. The renovated space will be used for executive offices and a new education center.

Military officials say the Army is expanding its hospital at Fort Stewart for the first time since it was completed more than three decades ago. The Savannah Morning News reports that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District broke ground on the $23.1 million expansion of Winn Army Community Hospital on Monday. It's expected to be completed in September 2013.

Time is running out on a tax rebate for energy-efficient home repairs. The $1,500 tax credit was part of the federal stimulus and has helped Georgia businesses selling air-conditioners, water heaters and other products. Gill Sasser of Savannah Window World says, he hopes Congress renews it before it expires in a month.
