A landmark penny-sales-tax vote for transportation projects in Georgia is six months away and the campaign to pass the tax is starting to take shape. Doug Callaway, executive director of the Georgia Transportation Alliance, is traveling the state talking to Georgians about what he thinks are the merits of the penny tax: more jobs, safer roads, and local control.

A major commuter rail project that would involve a quarter of the state’s transportation districts—is on life support. The proposed Atlanta-to-Griffin-to-middle Georgia line might not go before voters next year. The state’s 12 region roundtables had until midnight Monday to pare-down their project lists to fit within projected revenues from a proposed regional penny sales tax. While the two regions south of Atlanta ok’d the projects (Middle Georgia and Three Rivers) needed to link the passenger line together, Atlanta’s did not.

A key state senator is speaking out against a controversial highway project in northwest Georgia that's been tied up in litigation for decades. Republican Senator Jeff Mullis of Chicamauga says the Highway 4-11 connector in Rome is needed, but he’s urging state and federal transportation officials to choose a different route.

Voters will get a glimpse this week of what transportation projects a proposed sales tax could fund. State officials are expected to release lists of eligible projects for 12 regions on Wednesday.
