Funeral services have been set for a suburban Atlanta high school player who suffered a deadly spinal cord injury during a preseason football game. The junior at Creekside High School in Fairburn fractured a vertebra in his upper spinal cord during a scrimmage Friday night, investigators in the Atlanta area's Fulton County Medical Examiner's officials have said.
The parents of a 16-year-old south Georgia high school football player are demanding the Georgia High School Association investigate the death of their son, who died following practice Aug. 2. Attorney Benjamin Crump says Fitzgerald High School defensive lineman D.J. Searcy participated in an endurance test at a football camp in Columbia County, Fla., and fell to the ground. Crump says Searcy said he couldn't continue but was told to go on. Searcy was found unresponsive later that morning.
