A federal and state investigation into dog fighting and gambling has resulted in the arrest of 12 people from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Texas. U.S. Attorney George Beck said Monday they are charged with conducting an illegal gambling business and multiple dog fighting charges, including promoting dog fights. Additional defendants are being sought.
Organizers of an animal shelter in southern Georgia say many pit bull owners are parting ways with their dogs in the wake of a new county ordinance. Of the 32 dogs currently being housed in the Terrell County shelter, about 28 of them are pit bulls.
The city of Douglasville west of Atlanta has delayed a vote on a possible ban on pit bulls. The city council met Monday night to take public comment and consider the measure, which would be one of the first such ordinances in the state if passed.
