A new method of street parking is in place on a downtown block of Third Street, in Macon. It's called reverse parking. Drivers must back into a space at a 60-degree angle to the roadway. The idea is to give drivers better visibility when pulling into the street.
State officials building a new $24 million parking deck at the Georgia Capitol are designing special parking spaces for lawmakers to give them more room for their vehicles. Design plans indicate that standard spots will be 8 feet, 6 inches wide. The "legislative" spots will be 10 feet wide.
Officials in Athens have temporarily suspended car booting in the downtown area as they examine due process issues related to the controversial practice. Athens Downtown Development Authority board member Erica Cascio said the suspension does not mean parking tickets won't be written or fines won't accumulate.
Savannah officials hope to lure more holiday shoppers downtown by offering free parking until after Christmas. The city is offering up to three hours of free parking at its five garages in the downtown historic district every Thursday and Friday. The deal lasts through Dec. 28.
Vacationers heading to Jekyll Island will have to pay more for parking starting July 1. The Jekyll Island Authority has approved a $1 increase in the price of a daily parking pass at the state park on the Georgia coast.
