Southern Nuclear officials say a reactor at Plant Vogtle shut down during equipment maintenance. The company said that the plant's safety systems functioned properly during the Wednesday morning incident and the reactor is stable. Plant workers are investigating the cause.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission says a license to build one of the nation's first nuclear power plants in a generation could come by December. NRC officials said this week in a letter that they plan to issue a final safety report this month on Georgia Power's plan to build two more reactors at Plant Vogtle near Augusta.

Nearly two weeks after work halted on an east Georgia nuclear power plant, there are more problems. Southern Company said today that a firm hired by its main contractor, The Shaw Group, had supervisors fill out security questionnaires for their employees. Those questionnaires ask workers about drug and alcohol abuse and workers are supposed to answer those questionnaires personally. The workers involved are no longer working at the site
