Republican Rep. Jeff Chapman of Brunswick has proposed trimming the profits of Georgia Power if the cost of building Plant Vogtle near Augusta exceeds a construction budget set at over $6 billion.

Georgia Power could earn more money if it goes over-budget building two new nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle near Augusta. Right now Georgia Power can earn up to 12 percent of what it charges customers. Plant Vogtle’s construction costs are included in that charge which means higher building expenditures could boost Georgia Power’s profit.

Georgia Power warned Friday that building two more reactors at Plant Vogtle near Augusta could take longer and cost more than expected. In a filing Friday, company officials said schedule delays, change orders and the difficulties of trying to break ground on the first nuclear power plant in a generation could require more money and time. The company said the project will be cost-effective for customers so long as it's completed for less than $8 billion.
