A new survey shows, Metro Atlanta and Southeast Georgia voters favor a proposed new sales tax by a two-to-one margin. The state-wide poll by Survey USA for WXIA-TV Atlanta shows Northwest Georgia is evenly split on the tax idea, called T-SPLOST. Savannah's Chatham County Commission Chairman Pete Liakakis says, with an uncertain vote date, it's still too early for campaigning.

One of northwest Georgia's largest carpet companies has announced that it will close a manufacturing facility in Dalton, known for decades as the nation's carpet capital. The Daily Citizen reports that the closing of Shaw's plant on Riverbend Drive will be in the next 60 days, resulting in 270 layoffs.

The Lowe's chain of home improvement stores is bringing a new distribution center to northwest Georgia. Governor Nathan Deal attended the groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday morning in Rome. The facility is expected to eventually create 600 new jobs for the area.

The town of Ringgold was among several in northwest Georgia that suffered widespread devastation from the April tornadoes. Ringgold High School absorbed significant damage, including to outside structures like the football stadium. But the school's principal says the community is healing, much because of its football team.

Project wish lists for Georgia’s 12 transportation regions are almost complete. In 2012, voters will decide whether to pay a penny sales tax to fund the work. The process of whittling-down the lists -- and convincing voters to support them -- is a challenge for municipalities trying to serve voters locally, and support the region.

Georgia is getting a federal labor grant of $3.75 million to help hundreds of workers affected by the closure of the Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital in Rome. State labor officials say the federal cash comes from National Emergency Grant funding to provide training and support services to about 750 affected workers.

Experts say deadly storms that raked Georgia this week spawned at least 10 tornadoes, including a rare EF-4 tornado that pummeled Catoosa County with 175 mph winds. National Weather Service meteorologist Jessica Sieux said Friday it's possible more tornadoes will be added to the list as survey teams continue investigating reports.
