    Federal officials say the Georgia Department of Transportation and a Tennessee construction company have agreed to pay one of the largest fines in the history of the federal Clean Water Act. The fine settles possible violations during highway expansion projects. U-S Justice Department and Environmental Protection Agency officials say, the Tennesse company and the Georgia agency will pay $1.5 million in penalties and spend $1.3 million more to resolve environmental issues.

    The president of Georgia Highlands College says he plans to retire at the end of the year. J. Randy Pierce announced Thursday that he will retire December 31st after 10 years at the helm of the two-year college with campuses in Rome, Cartersville and other parts of north Georgia. A search to replace Pierce will be launched in coming weeks.

    Twisters and heavy rains were the result of slow-moving remnants of Tropical Storm Lee that pushed through the northern portion of Georgia. State emergency officials say nearly 100 homes were damaged in north Georgia’s Cherokee County from severe weather that moved through Monday.

    A mega sports and entertainment complex is set to break ground in north Georgia’s Bartow County. A county official says the 1,400 acre project is planned for a site just north of Lake Allatoona off Interstate 75.
