US Forest Service officials say, they expect to have three more air tankers to tackle this year's wildfire season. And ten more are on the way for next year. The service could call on the military aircraft when large fires get out of control anywhere in the country, including South Georgia. A burn ban is going into effect Tuesday.
More than a dozen Georgia roadless areas are expected to get new protections. A federal judge has upheld a Clinton-era ban on new roads on federal land. The ruling affects more than a dozen areas in North Georgia's Chattahoochee National Forest. The decision clears the way for the Obama administration to start enforcing the so-called "roadless rule."
The terror attacks ten years ago helped shape the Brunswick area as one of its economic engines expanded. The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center is based in the coastal city and trains 20,000 federal officers in 90 agencies each year. That's compared to 16,000 officers before the attacks.
Federal officials want to manage national forests with climate change in mind. That's one of the many goals of a proposed massive overhaul of the way the National Forest Service manages public land. It's the first major change in forest management practices in almost 30 years.
