Officials in coastal Chatham County are debating whether to erect a memorial to a slain policeman. Officer Mark MacPhail was gunned down in 1989. The execution of his convicted killer, Troy Davis, made international headlines two years ago. County commissioner Helen Stone wants a monument where officer MacPhail died at a Savannah bus station, but officials say this would set a bad precedent.

In the two decades since Davis was condemned for fatally shooting Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail, seven of the nine witnesses who testified against Davis at his trial have recanted their testimony. No jury has heard those recantations, and a Savannah judged looked upon evidence of changed testimony with suspicion.

A federal judge in Savannah has dealt a setback to the Georgia death row inmate whose case has become a rallying point for death penalty opponents worldwide. Judge William T. Moore says, Troy Anthony Davis did not prove his innocence in an unusual hearing that took place in his Savannah courtroom earlier this summer.
