Macon voters are going to the polls Tuesday to decide a runoff election between Mayor Robert Reichert and challenger C. Jack Ellis, a former Macon mayor. Reichert and Ellis were the top vote-getters in a Sept. 17 election, setting up Tuesday's runoff.
Attorneys for three different parties presented arguments to the Georgia Supreme Court about an ongoing border war Tuesday. Monroe County and Bibb County have been in legal limbo for several years over where their shared border lies. Secretary of State Brian Kemp appealed to the state Supreme Court after a lower court ordered him to accept a new county line between the two.
A new Tubman African American Museum is expected to open by January 2015 after construction resumes late this year in Macon. Museum Director Andy Ambrose gave an update on the timeframe Thursday at a meeting of the Macon-Bibb County Urban Development Authority. Work on the Cherry Street property stopped in 2005 when the museum ran out of money.
Authorities say much of central and south Georgia will once again be under a flash flood watch as more heavy rains are expected. The watch includes the cities of Americus, Dublin, Macon, Milledgeville and Vidalia. It is scheduled to be in effect from noon Tuesday through Tuesday evening.
Bibb County's Attorney, Virgil Adams, has requested the Department of Justice render a decision about the consolidated Macon/Bibb County elections by Monday. Lawmakers passed local legislation during the 2013 session to change the area’s elections from partisan to non-partisan as voters elect their first consolidated government.
