State lawmakers spent the legislative session focusing on a fraction of the students in Georgia — those at a handful of charter schools created by now-defunct commission. The aim was to pass a constitutional amendment to address a nearly year-old ruling by the state Supreme Court that outlawed the Georgia Charter Schools Commission, which approved 16 schools before it was disbanded in May.

House Speaker David Ralston gaveled out the 2012 session of the Georgia General Assembly Thursday at midnight. State lawmakers tackled some thorny issues this session, including tax reform. But the volume of bills was much lower than last year, as many lawmakers were eager to finish up early so they could hit the campaign trail.

The Georgia Legislature will wrap up the 2011 legislative session on April 14. The House on Monday unanimously adopted a resolution setting the calendar for the remainder of the 40-day session. The Senate was expected to take it up Monday afternoon. Lawmakers are set to meet all five days next week. They will take off April 4-8, which coincides with many school district spring breaks as well as the Masters Tournament in Augusta.

Legislation to allow voters to decide whether alcohol could be sold by retailers in their communities on Sundays has been passed by the state Senate. The vote was 32-22 to approve, following over two hours of debate.
