State officials have been notified that a northwest Georgia firm is laying off 67 employees at its Rome plant. The Rome News-Tribune reported that General Aluminum Manufacturing Co. has notified the Georgia Department of Labor that it intends to lay off the employees. The letter sent to the state indicated that the layoffs represent the plant's entire workforce.
According to state labor officials, there are more than a quarter of a million Georgians that have been out of work for 27 weeks or more. Georgia's unemployment rate is up from last month and back into the double digits.
