Mercer University basketball fans are back down to earth after the Bears lost to the University Tennessee by 20 points Sunday night. Just 48 hours earlier Mercer was the talk of the sports world after upsetting Duke University in the NCAA tournament.

On paper, it didn't look likely at all. Mercer is a mid-sized private school Macon that hasn't taken part in March Madness since 1985, while Duke is one of the most storied college teams in basketball history.

The last time Mercer University basketball took any part in March Madness, REO Speedwagon’s "Can't Fight This Feeling" was on top of the charts — March, 1985 to be exact.

Helen Meadors has seen a lot of weird things in Macon. But nothing topped her drive down Riverside Drive in the winter of 2008 -- a sight that remains a mystery. Meadors and a friend were leaving a downtown business when they noticed a peculiar sight on the side of the road, just east of Burger King. “There’s a large pile of red clay pointed at the top and it looks like an ant hill,” Meadors recounted. “Somebody has made a welded sculpture of Santa Claus in a sleigh and the reindeer are ants and on the side of the sleigh it says, ‘Ho, ho,’ and he is driving the ants.”

Mercer University has the most successful first-year football program in NCAA Division I history. The Mercer University Bears wrapped up their first football season in 72 years Saturday with a record-setting win against Stetson University. The team defied low preseason expectations and topped a record for most wins in a debut season previously set by Old Dominion in 2009.

If Mercer University's new football team wins their homecoming game in Macon Saturday they will be the winningest first-year program in Division I history. Mercer University’s rebooted football team didn’t win their shot at the championship title with a loss at Marist College last Saturday, but the possibility of setting a national record still exists. Mercer’s first team in 72 years wasn’t expected to go 9-2 in their debut season. Their mostly-freshmen roster was picked to finish 11th in the Pioneer Football League, yet they came close to winning the conference title.

Mercer University football's five-game winning streak is over. Mercer was bested 33-7 by Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York Saturday. The Bears had the possibility to clinch a share of the Pioneer League title, after San Diego withdrew from contention over rules violations. The loss means those dreams are over.

The Atlanta Braves plan to move from their home at Turner Field to a new stadium in Cobb County in 2017. The new ballpark will be at the intersection of I-75 and I-285 in the Cumberland Mall/ Cobb Galleria area. The new stadium is projected to cost about $672 million including parking, infrastructure, and land. Atlanta Braves President John Scherholz says team officials wanted to find a prime destination for Braves fans.
