Georgia home and business owners still can rely on federal disaster assistance. That's the word from Georgia emergency management officials as FEMA says, it's suspending some disaster payments in the wake of Hurricane Irene. A GEMA spokesman says, the federal agency is delaying payments for a certain types of completed, government-backed disaster repair going back years.

National Weather Service forecasters are warning of several threats to Georgia marine interests because of Hurricane Irene. The US Coast Guard is urging shippers to use extreme caution because of possible 15-foot seas, dangerous rip currents and unusually high tides. On land, however, the Savannah area could get less than an inch of rain.
Hurricane Irene is moving closer to the U.S. main land. A particularly large weather system, Irene’s impacts will extend well beyond the center of the storm. Coastal flooding and high surf advisories are in effect for coastal Georgia.
The Bahamas are under a hurricane warning as Irene continues to move towards the northwest. The storm is expected to make landfall within the U.S. on Saturday afternoon. In addition, Hurricane Irene is forecasted to hit New England early next week.
