A member of an elite military helicopter unit is dead and two others are injured after a "hard landing" at a Georgia air base Wednesday. Investigators have yet to determine what went wrong or why. An Army spokesman says the MH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crew was coming in from a routine training flight.

Twelve organizations are uniting their efforts to restore longleaf pine forests in Georgia. The forests are seen as critical for wildlife. They also benefit timber production. The effort is part of a multi-state coming together of public and private groups aimed at longleaf restoration.

An elite Army helicopter unit based in coastal Georgia is building a memorial to its fallen members. A ground breaking ceremony was scheduled Thursday at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah for the new memorial for the 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment.

Army officials say 85 Georgia-based soldiers are coming home from Afghanistan ahead of schedule. The soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment based at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah were scheduled to return Tuesday after being deployed overseas for six months.

Military officials say soldiers who live at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah will soon get new housing. The housing upgrades are part of a 2003 Army initiative to better care for soldiers and families as they face constant deployments and related stresses.
