A new report ranks Georgia 45th on how well the state’s health care system works for low-income families. For people with low incomes, Georgia ranked 46th in health care access and affordability, 47th in performance and treatment, 34th in potentially avoidable hospital use, and 35th in healthy lives, according to the report.

One Georgia lawmaker believes the state is missing out on millions of dollars in potential tax revenue this Independence Day. Senator Jeff Mullis, R–Chickamauga, proposed legislation this year that would legalize the sale of fireworks in Georgia. The bill did not make it past the Senate, but Mullis said he plans to pick the issue up again during the 2014 session.

The Georgia Chamber of Commerce held a conference Wednesday to address upcoming changes to the healthcare industry because of the Affordable Care Act. The insurance mandate included in the law will go into effect on January 1, 2014. That leaves just six months for employers and individuals to research their insurance options.

Piedmont Healthcare and WellStar Health System have announced plans to launch a variety of insurance products in 2014 for Piedmont and WellStar employees and their relatives. The health systems will operate their new insurance company as a joint venture for-profit enterprise.

Georgia Health Sciences Health System officials announced Wednesday that visitation has been restricted to friends and family over the age of 17. In a release, hospital officials cite a rise in flu cases among school-aged children as a reason behind the age restriction.

Georgia is getting a federal labor grant of $3.75 million to help hundreds of workers affected by the closure of the Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital in Rome. State labor officials say the federal cash comes from National Emergency Grant funding to provide training and support services to about 750 affected workers.
