Runners and mountain bikers in Dalton will soon have a new trail in the heart of the northwest Georgia city. Dalton Parks and Recreation Department Director Steve Card says an opening ceremony for the new hiking and biking trail on Mount Rachel could be held in the next month or so.
Hikers who reach the end of the Appalachian Trail in north Georgia could eventually have the option of continuing another 500 miles. A national preservation group is working to connect the trail with the Gulf of Mexico via the Chattahoochee River.
A new pass is now mandatory for outdoor enthusiasts at 32 sites statewide. It’s called the Georgia Outdoor Recreation Pass (GORP). Visitors are now required to purchase the GORP for $3.50 for three days or $19 for the year.
