    Tonight at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center in Dalton, Buford pulled what could be called the upset of the GHSA boys state basketball tournament.The Wolves took down perennial power South Atlanta, which had been ranked No. 1 in Class AA for much of the season.

    The second round of the state high school basketball playoffs took place Tuesday on campuses around the state. For the most part, the favorites rolled. However, in Cherokee County, third-seeded Milton pulled another upset as they defeated No. 1 seed Etowah on their home floor. The Lady Eagles had upended No. 2 seed Parkview last week on the road.

    In the first round of the playoffs, many of the state’s top players guided their teams onward to the next game. However, after losses, Berkmar, Hillgrove, Redan and Walton each saw players fall out of this week’s list. But, on the other side of the coin, Sequoyah, Norcross, North Gwinnett and Northview each had players selected for this week’s 44 after big opening round wins.

    From Savannah to the Tennessee line, we were all over the first round of the state basketball playoffs tonight. While there were some upsets - such as Redan and Savannah Christian going down - perennial powers like the Miller Grove boys and Wesleyan girls rolled past out-matched opponents.

    It’s time for the state playoffs! And with it comes the playoff edition of the Score 44. In this edition, we list the top 44 high school hoops seniors as they stand going into the playoffs. The region playoffs made a significant impact on this week’s updates. Collins Hill did not make the state playoffs, and therefore, Eagles players Herdie Lawrence and Saah Nimley were taken off the list.

    Rivalry games tend to bring out the best in sports. And tonight's Region 7-5A semifinal between Gwinnett County neighbors North Gwinnett and Peachtree Ridge was no exception. After nine lead changes and a blur of late fouls in a game webcasted on GPB.org, the No. 2 Lions defeated the No. 7 Bulldogs 57-53 at Mill Creek.
