State health officials and executives of a metro Atlanta hospital say more than 100 patients may have been exposed to tuberculosis. Officials said Tuesday that an unidentified Gwinnett Medical Center employee was diagnosed with tuberculosis in mid-May.
In the last month, two high school football players in Georgia died from what appear to be heat-related causes. These incidents have, again, focused attention on the issue of extreme heat and physical activity, and the particular dangers for young athletes. Tim Simmons spoke to GPB about the issue. He is manager of the sports medicine program at Gwinnett Medical Center, and a member of the national and Georgia Athletic Trainers Associations.
The organization overseeing Georgia high school sports is more sharply defining its policies on head injuries for athletes. One change will allow football referees more leeway in making the call to pull a player from a game.
