Georgia educators will soon implement new programs for the state’s youngest students. Governor Nathan Deal announced Thursday the state was one of six to earn a Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge grant from the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Kentucky, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Vermont were also awarded RTT-ELC grants.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has given the University of Georgia Research Foundation a $3.4 million grant to help fight a debilitating tropical disease. UGA officials said Tuesday the award will be used to expand research on how to eliminate schistosomiasis, a disease caused by worms and contracted when people come in contact with contaminated water.

An assistant professor at Georgia State University has been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation. Misty Bentz received a five-year grant of more than $862,000 to measure the distance to galaxies where astronomers have pinpointed masses of black holes.

When the bell rang students back to Savannah's Beach High School this year, students and faculty came back to the news that the long-struggling school, filled with poor and at-risk students, now actually leads the district in some tests. That's a big change from just a few years ago when ambivalent students took failure for granted. Local school officials credit an influx of money and new leadership.
