One Georgia lawmaker believes the state is missing out on millions of dollars in potential tax revenue this Independence Day. Senator Jeff Mullis, R–Chickamauga, proposed legislation this year that would legalize the sale of fireworks in Georgia. The bill did not make it past the Senate, but Mullis said he plans to pick the issue up again during the 2014 session.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal said Thursday he would announce his appointments to a review panel in the case of state Representative Tyrone Brooks on Friday. Friday marks exactly two weeks since the Governor received a certified copy of the indictment against Brooks from the Attorney General’s Office.

Governor Nathan Deal will likely announce his appointments Friday to a review panel tasked with deciding whether to suspend State Representative Tyrone Brooks, D-Atlanta. Brooks was indicted by a grand jury in May for 30 counts of fraud and tax charges. According to the indictment, Brooks used money from his charity, Universal Humanities, for personal expenses. Brooks pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Nikema Williams officially took over as interim Chairwoman of the Democratic Party of Georgia Monday. Williams previously served as the party’s First Vice Chair, but was moved to the interim position after former Chairman Mike Berlon stepped down. Berlon’s resignation was effective Sunday.

The commission working to preserve the culture of slave descendants on the Southeast coast will be hiring an executive director now that the federal government has approved its management plan. Commissioners from the Carolinas, Florida and Georgia applauded warmly Friday when the letter approving the plan was read during the panel's meeting in Conway.
