More than 11,000 Georgians lost HOPE grants to attend state technical colleges when the state Legislature imposed tougher academic requirements in 2011, and more than half have not re-enrolled in school as of this fall, according to Technical College System of Georgia statistics.

Georgia Lottery officials have launched a new Atlanta Falcons-themed game. Officials said Tuesday that Atlanta Falcons Big Win is a $5 game with top prizes of $350,000. Georgia Lottery officials say 2013 marks the fourth consecutive year the franchise has partnered with them to create a game.

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan visits Atlanta Friday to highlight Georgia’s pre-kindergarten programs and the president’s plan to expand access to early learning programs nation wide. The president pointed to Georgia as an example of successful pre-K and early learning opportunities starting in his State of the Union speech and in a subsequent visit to Atlanta.

A bill that would allow the state to get a better handle on video poker machines moved one step closer to becoming law Thursday. The vote followed a spirited three-hour debate in the state Senate that revealed ambivalence about permitting the machines in Georgia.

Authorities say a $49 million winning lottery ticket has been sold in south Georgia. With many lottery players focused on a record $500 Powerball jackpot that has yet to be won, the winning Georgia ticket matched all six numbers from a Tuesday night drawing in another game, Mega Millions.

A spokeswoman for the Georgia Lottery Corp. says president and CEO Margaret DeFrancisco will be stepping down. Tandi Reddick said DeFrancisco notified the lottery's governing board Wednesday that she plans to retire. Reddick said DeFrancisco has not set a departure date.
