Ashley Diamond took the Department of Corrections to court, after she was denied hormone treatment. She also says she was housed with male inmates and was sexually assaulted several times.

The guards who stepped down haven't been identified and Department of Corrections spokeswoman Gwendolyn Hogan says the incident is still under investigation.

A state program is seeking to even the scales between urban and rural justice, giving people who have gotten into trouble with the law an equal shot at getting their lives back on track. The state Department of Corrections offers intensive drug counseling and other services designed to keep probationers from reoffending at Day Reporting Centers, or DRCs, in 14 regional urban centers, such as Macon, Columbus, and Savannah. Until recently, no such services were available to probationers in the more remote areas of Georgia. But the DRC Lite program, now in its second year, puts bare bones equivalents in 11 rural judicial circuits across the state.

The state that was the first to pass a law prohibiting the execution of mentally disabled death row inmates is revisiting a requirement for defendants to prove the disability beyond a reasonable doubt — the strictest burden of proof in the nation. A state House committee is holding an out-of-session meeting Thursday to seek input from the public. Other states that impose the death penalty have a lower threshold for proving mental disability, and some don't set standards at all.

The commissioner of the Georgia Department of Corrections has scheduled an execution for a man convicted in the 1990 killing of a fellow inmate. Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens on Tuesday announced that the execution of Warren Lee Hill has been scheduled for 7 p.m. on July 18.
