Gov. Nathan Deal has announced the state Department of Economic Development has awarded more than $178,000 in grants to 13 agencies promoting fine arts and tourism throughout the state. Deal said Wednesday the Georgia Council for the Arts is distributing the funding as part of the state's Tourism Product Development Agreement program.
State arts officials are getting back into the award-giving business. For the first time since the 1990's, the state-run Georgia Council for the Arts is asking for nominations for Governor's Awards in the Arts. It's acutally now a combined honor for the Arts and Humanities.
The Columbus area will be the latest to offer input on a strategic plan for the Georgia Council for the Arts Wednesday morning. Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson said she wants the council to coordinate resources and foster collaborations.
Backers of the arts in Georgia pushed their case for $1 million in funding at the state Capitol this week. Arts advocates want to make sure a restructuring of Georgia’s Council for the Arts doesn’t leave federal money on the table.
