The White House is set to honor an openly gay Georgia state lawmaker as one of 10 Harvey Milk Champions of Change. White House officials say Democratic State Rep. Simone Bell is being recognized along with nine others Wednesday for their commitment to equality and public service.
The repeal effective Tuesday of the military's ban on gay service members isn't expected to have a great impact at Georgia's military schools. The military branches already have trained most all of their personnel and cadets on the policy. A military science professor at North Georgia College and State University says, the training there was met without complaint or fanfare.
US Census figures show, the number of couples identifying themselves as living in same-sex households in Georgia is up 55% from ten years ago. Statistics released Thursday show, the state has nearly 30,000 households self-reporting as having a same-sex couple. A demographer says, the official figure doesn't include all of Georgia's same-sex couples.
Former Senator Sam Nunn says Congress should repeal the militaries' “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy and allow gay men and women to serve openly in the military. Nunn was instrumental in crafting the original policy.
