Commanders at Fort Stewart are trying to prepare Army families for a blow to services with more than 2,800 civilian workers expected to begin taking furlough days next month. Brig. Gen. John Hort and other leaders planned a town hall meeting Friday for those who live and work on Fort Stewart.
Six elementary schools and a middle school at Fort Benning will close for up to five days in September because of teacher furloughs. Department of Defense Education Activity director Marilee Fitzgerald said the furloughs will affect some 11,000 educators working in the nine-month category throughout the department.
Authorities say about 2,000 Federal Aviation Administration employees in metro Atlanta are being told they will have to take unpaid time off because of automatic federal budget cuts. The workers have been told they must take as many as 11 unpaid days off in coming months.
