Health officials say they're looking to hire a for-profit company to oversee the care of some of the state's most vulnerable children. Youth advocates and pediatricians say so-called "managed care" could help better coordinate their health care.
A dozen Florida and Georgia border counties have signed an agreement making it easier for children removed from parents or guardians to be placed with relatives in the other state. An existing compact adopted by all 50 states requires a lengthy process to relocate foster children to another state. The agreement among the 12 border counties is expected to allow for such placements in as little as a week.
A report by federal monitors says foster children in Fulton and DeKalb counties are being abused and neglected at the highest rate in four years. The report found that 25 of just over 21-hundred children were abused or neglected.
