An elite Army helicopter unit based in coastal Georgia is building a memorial to its fallen members. A ground breaking ceremony was scheduled Thursday at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah for the new memorial for the 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment.
A Fort Stewart spokesman says six soldiers based at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield have died this week in Afghanistan. Staff Sgt. Rex L. Schad of Edmond, Okla., was killed Monday by small arms fire. Five others died in a helicopter crash.
A funeral service has been set for a soldier from central Georgia who was killed in Afghanistan. A Defense Department statement Wednesday said Spc. Erica P. Alecksen of Eatonton was among six soldiers who were killed in a bombing in Afghanistan.
Spc. Bryant J. Luxmore of New Windsor, Ill., died Sunday when he was on patrol with Afghan security forces near Panjwai and was hit by gunfire. The 25-year-old soldier was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart.
