Last year was the first year in Southern Company’s 100 year history that the company used more natural gas than coal to generate electricity. But while natural gas is cheap and plentiful, the company isn’t willing to convert all its plants to natural gas.

Georgia road-builders could start using a paving material made of coal ash from electric plants if a Southeast Georgia test project goes the way one utility wants. The Jacksonville energy company JEA is paving a private dirt road along the St. Mary's River in Georgia's Charlton County. Environmentalists say they can't think of a worse place to test a material that comes from coal and oil byproduct.

Tourism and retail spending are boosting Savannah's economy, but those are the only positive signs in a third quarter economic report. Armstrong Atlantic State University's Center for Regional Analysis released its quarterly forecast this week.
