A federal labor board is upholding an election at Delta Air Lines Inc. where baggage handlers voted against joining a union. The National Mediation Board had been looking into claims by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers that Delta interfered in the election last year.

Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp has announced qualifying dates for candidates seeking a state Senate seat in west Georgia. Kemp says qualifying for the Nov. 8 election to fill Senate district 28 will open at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning and close at noon Wednesday.

The Rome City Commission has deferred until next year a vote on Sunday alcohol retail sales. The commission had planned to put the issue on the Nov. 8 ballot, but decided Monday night to hold off because there's no other reason to hold an election that day in the northwest Georgia city. A tally by the Georgia Food Industry Association finds nearly 100 cities and counties throughout the state are set to hold Sunday sales referendums during the November general election later this year.

The man who orchestrated Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed's campaign has been tapped to help President Barack Obama win the South in 2012. A spokesman for Obama for America says Tharon Johnson has joined the campaign as the southern regional director and will be "a key part to building the organization" in the area.

Facing tea party opposition, Governor Nathan Deal has abandoned for now plans to shift a public vote on a one penny transportation tax hike until the November 2012 general election. By late Wednesday legislative leaders said they hadn't yet reached a deal.

A Republican businessman from Oconee County is headed to the legislature to represent State House District 113. Unofficial results show Chuck Williams captured 62 percent of the vote in Tuesday's runoff. His challenger, Democrat Dan Matthews, received just 38 percent. Williams drew strong support in the heavily Republican areas of his home county, and Morgan and Oglethorpe Counties.

Bulloch County Commissioners have decided to put a Sunday alcohol sales referendum on the ballot this fall. The referendum on Nov. 8 applies only to package sales of malt beverages and wine. Liquor can be purchased in the county only in restaurants with a license to pour.

Voters in Athens won't have a chance to vote on Sunday sales of alcohol in stores until next year. Athens-Clarke commissioners say they are delaying a referendum on Sunday sales until the presidential primaries next year. The primary date has not been scheduled, but Georgia's usually is held in March.

Momentum is picking-up across the state as more cities and counties prepare to put the question of Sunday alcohol sales to their voters. But many liquor stores owners are at best -- lukewarm -- on the possibility of another day of sales.

Voters in three Southeast Georgia counties have until Friday to cast their votes during the "early voting" period for a special election. County election officials, however, say the problem is that few people have voted and it's costing them money to staff the "early voting" booth.
