A west Georgia professor is getting national attention for his poetry. Nick Norwood teaches creative writing at Columbus State University. On Wednesday, May 8th A Prairie Home Companion host Garrison Keillor read Norwood’s poem “Jarring Honey” on Writer’s Almanac for public radio.

The federal government has reached a settlement agreement with the DeKalb County School District over alleged harassment of a Sikh middle school student. The settlement was announced Tuesday and will be in effect through the end of the 2014-15 school year.

Gov. Nathan Deal has signed a bill to standardize annual evaluations for Georgia teachers and principals based, in part, on student performance. Deal signed the legislation without comment on Tuesday, which is the last day for bill signings.

The Georgia Department of Education said the average score for Georgia's elementary schools is 83.4; middle schools is 81.4 and high schools is 72.6.

A spokesman for the Georgia Board of Regents says the board has not approved any renovation work done at the president's home at Georgia Regents University in several years. But a variety of renovations completed since June 2010 amount to about $284,000.
