The Department of Natural Resources is set to decide today whether or not to test a new underground water storage system. The $4 million experiment in Baker County will be Georgia's first attempt at aquifer storage and recovery. Backers say the idea has been used successfully around the country for decades.

Georgia has seen so much rain in the last two weeks, that there are no more areas of extreme or exceptional drought in the state. That helps farmers long-term, but some have had to delay planting due to all the rain.

Northeast Georgia counties are no longer in drought. It’s thanks to the recent rains. Central Georgia still faces the worst drought conditions.

A recent report by the U.S. Drought Monitor says Hall County in north Georgia is no longer in a drought. The drought review issued Thursday morning shows Hall County's water conditions have been upgraded from abnormally dry to normal. It’s one of about two dozen counties with normal conditions in north Georgia.

The rainwater harvesting industry and metro Atlanta businesses are joining forces in an effort to conserve water. The goal is to reduce Atlanta’s water demand in the next 5 years by 27 million gallons a day by collecting rainwater.

State Climatologist Bill Murphey says the rain over Christmas and New Year’s helped ease drought conditions in northern Georgia. But he says central and southern Georgia didn’t see much benefit from the storms.

Authorities say Lake Lanier has risen higher than 1,058 feet above sea level for the first time since Nov. 23. The lake northeast of Atlanta has been steadily rising since Dec. 19, when it had fallen to its lowest level since Jan. 16, 2009. At that time, the region was in a fierce two-year drought.
