New rules for dogs on St. Simons Island are drawing both cheers and jeers from dog lovers. On the one hand, Glynn County officials are banning dogs on the island's beach this summer when the sand is most popular, during the day. On the other hand, they're giving dog owners the discretion to unleash their dogs and let them roam free in the mornings and evenings.

Authorities say heat has claimed the lives of 14 dogs at a Waycross animal shelter in the past three months, including a seven-month-old puppy that died Wednesday. Okefenokee Humane Society shelter manager Ben Hood says the 14 dogs died of heatstroke in the kennel, which has no fans because it lacks electricity.

A new University of Georgia study has proved for the first time that smaller dogs live longer than larger ones. The research has also determined the main cause of death for each dog breed.

Polk county officials rescued 33 dogs from an alleged dog-fighting operation. Some of the dogs showed signs of abuse. Four people were arrested in the raid. They face charges of animal cruelty and drug possession.
