The Georgia Department of Labor is ending paper checks this week. Starting Friday, recipients will have to choose between direct deposit into their checking accounts or a debit card with a Mastercard logo.

Wells Fargo will begin charging some Georgia customers $3 a month to use their debit cards. Georgia is one of four states where a pilot program will tack on the fee every month when a debit card is used. The pilot begins in October.

As gas prices continue rising, some Savannah drivers are enjoying ever-lower prices because of a price war among local gas stations. Three area gas station chains are discounting gas by as much as 15 cents a gallon for customers using special store-sponsored debit cards. The competition is intense by national standards.
