One westbound lane of Interstate 16 remained closed early Thursday, a day after 27 cars and trucks collided in a fiery pileup. Georgia Department of Transportation officials said the right, westbound lane is expected to be closed until noon Thursday. The chain-reaction accidents around 8:10 a.m. Wednesday killed four people and sent nine others to a hospital.

Georgia law enforcement authorities say 19 fatal crashes occurred in the state during the recent Thanksgiving holiday travel period. The Department of Public Safety reported the numbers early Monday, after the 102-hour Thanksgiving holiday travel period ended late Sunday night.

Authorities said Tuesday 10 people died in traffic crashes across Georgia during the 78-hour Labor Day holiday travel period. The Georgia State Patrol said the 10 people died in eight fatal crashes.

A grand jury has indicted a boater involved in a deadly crash on Lake Lanier who now faces homicide charges. The Times of Gainesville reports that a Hall County grand jury indicted Paul J. Bennett of Cumming in connection with the June 18 collision that killed 13-year-old Griffin Prince and his 9-year-old brother, Jake, both of Buford.
