State officials are defending themselves against a lawsuit over the number of public defenders in south-central Georgia. This is the second time in 10 years that the Southern Center for Human Rights has sued over the Cordele judicial circuit, which doesn't have nearly enough lawyers for the poor, said attorney Atteeyah Hollie with the center.
Governor Nathan Deal signed an agreement in Southwest Georgia Wednesday aimed at boosting traffic at the Port of Savannah. The deal between Crisp County's Cordele Intermodal Services and the Georgia Ports Authority is part of state efforts to get more freight moving through the inland Port of Cordele.
Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal is expected to sign a new inland port agreement with the Georgia Ports Authority and Cordele Intermodal Services. Georgia Ports Authority officials say the deal, which will be signed Wednesday afternoon in Cordele, will help create and expand international markets for regional businesses.
Officials say, Georgia's inland port will start shipping containers by rail to the seaport of Savannah starting in October. The start-up of the port in Cordele will be slow, with about a hundred jobs being filled in the next few months. Once fully operational, however, the port could be the center of thousands of shipping, warehouse and transportation jobs.
Construction on the state’s first inland port is underway in south Georgia. Officials say the first-phase of the freight transportation facility in Cordele should be up-and-running by fall of this year.
