Developers are set to start construction on a new convention hotel for Jekyll Island after long delays that largely resulted from difficulties getting a bank loan for the $41 million project. Members of the state park's governing board were scheduled attend a ground-breaking ceremony Monday for the 200-room Westin hotel.

Jekyll Island's governing board is considering a deal to help its planned convention hotel get back on track after financing problems caused groundbreaking to be delayed. The Jekyll Island Authority board was scheduled to meet Monday morning.

A tax break to promote new Georgia tourist attractions remains unavailable to businesses more than 16 months after the governor signed it into law, and the prolonged wait has already caused Jekyll Island to lose convention business worth about $3.8 million.
